555 Timer Driven Flyback Transformer

I made this project to test the concept for an ignition system for a spud cannon. I used a 555 timer to generate a frequency of around 8-10Khz with an 85% duty cycle. I connected this to an old flyback transformer i took out of an old tv and created a nice consistent spark that i could drive for hours. Only thing i noticed was that the transistor i used heated up considerably (i think this was a saturation issue). The most i could get this spark to fly was around 4-6mm, where the spark got visibily very weak. According to the theory i believe that i got around 5000 volts.
